Swindon Borough Council has completed a summer programme that resurfaced more than 20 roads, including Station Road and Bath Road, and said a further phase of work is expected early next year.

The council said on 2 October that the programme covered residential streets and high-traffic routes, with Colebrook Road and Eastcott Road also among those resurfaced. Roads were chosen using condition surveys and inspections.

The work forms part of the council's annual major and minor roads resurfacing programme, on which it said more than £2m will be spent this financial year.

Councillor Nick Gardiner, the council's Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: "Work was carried out across the summer in order to reduce the impact on journeys for residents in the Borough. The team also take into account key times routes were being used, undertaking overnight works where necessary."

How the programme was built up

The council first announced the summer programme on 3 July 2026, when it covered 18 roads. Work was scheduled between 13 July and the end of August to coincide with the school summer holidays, and followed a three-week scheme to resurface Blagrove Roundabout.

"By targeting roads that need attention now, we can prevent more costly repairs in the future," Cllr Gardiner said in July.

In August the council added four more locations: Bath Road, Croft Road, Draycot Road and The Ridgeway, and Station Road. Cllr Gardiner said at the time that this took the number of roads in the summer programme to 22.

Station Road was scheduled for overnight working, between 8pm and 6am, to avoid peak traffic, according to the council's August announcement.

Other highways work

The council said more than 10,000 reactive pothole repairs have been carried out across the borough this year.

Footpath reconstruction is also planned and under way at locations including Dorcan Way and Manchester Road, it said.

The funding

The council said the summer programme was delivered in line with its Local Transport Plan. When that plan was announced in February 2026, the council said more than 60 roads were set to be improved over two years.

It also said in February that it expected a 45% increase in funding for road repairs between then and 2029/30.

Nationally, the Department for Transport has set out £7.3bn of capital funding for local highway maintenance in England over the four years from 2026/27 to 2029/30.

What happens next

The council said planning is under way for the next phase of resurfacing, with schemes including Commercial Road and Crombey Street expected to be delivered early next year.

Roads listed by the council for resurfacing in the 2027/28 financial year include Devizes Road, Highworth Road and Corporation Street.
