VolkerFitzpatrick takes five places on MAG small and medium works framework
The contractor has been appointed to civils lots at Manchester, East Midlands and Stansted and building lots at two of the airports on a framework it values at £600m.
VolkerFitzpatrick has secured five places on Manchester Airports Group's Small to Medium Construction Works Framework, which the contractor values at £600m and which covers projects of up to £5m at Manchester, East Midlands and Stansted airports.
The appointment, announced by VolkerFitzpatrick, covers the civils lots at all three airports and the building lots at East Midlands and Stansted.
According to the contractor, the framework spans construction, civil engineering and mechanical and electrical projects. It said the agreement runs until 30 November 2031, with the potential to extend to November 2034.
Kevin Berry, Aviation Divisional Director at VolkerFitzpatrick, said: "We have extensive experience of delivering within complex, live airport environments, where safety, collaboration and careful planning are essential."
The lots
VolkerFitzpatrick said the civils lots cover airside and landside infrastructure, including the repair, improvement and construction of bridges, utilities and storm drainage systems. Its Aviation division will deliver that work.
The building lots at East Midlands and Stansted cover construction, fit-out and refurbishment projects, which the company said its Building division will support.
Berry said the appointment created opportunities across the business. "This is a significant appointment for VolkerFitzpatrick, creating opportunities for both our Building and Airside divisions and enabling us to bring together expertise from across the business," he said.
Existing relationship
The framework adds to work VolkerFitzpatrick already holds with MAG. The contractor is part of the group's Airfield Infrastructure Framework, which it said supports capital development across all three airports over a five-to-eight-year period.
MAG said that framework was set up to support the group over the next five to eight years and covers runway resurfacing, aircraft stand development and airfield ground lighting systems. Terry Fitzmaurice, MAG Procurement and Contracts Director, said at the time that it would foster a more collaborative relationship between MAG and its designers and contractors.
In its own announcement of its place on that framework, VolkerFitzpatrick described the agreement as designed to deliver end-to-end airfield infrastructure projects, including runway resurfacing, and said the work supports MAG's target of net-zero operations by 2038.
The client
MAG owns and operates Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands airports. In results published on 2 July 2026, the group said it served 66.3m passengers in the year to 31 March 2026 and invested £561.7m during the financial year.
Revenues reached £1.5bn, up 12.8% on the previous year, and operating profit was £303.9m, up 15.5%, according to MAG.
VolkerFitzpatrick is part of VolkerWessels UK, which employs more than 3,500 people and has a turnover above £1bn. The contractor says its own turnover is more than £600m a year.
Under the dates given by VolkerFitzpatrick, the Small to Medium Construction Works Framework runs to 30 November 2031 before any extension.
